Haysi vs TS Region D quarterfinal

Get this, TS was designated as the home team, wore their home whites, yet sat on the visitor bench and were the visiting team on the scoreboard.

When I got there, figured TS would sit on the home bench, so I sat down there. Had a goofy looking guy from Haysi tell me I couldn't sit there. He said that was Haysi's bench. Moved down to the other bench, then saw that I was in the Castlewood section and quickly moved.

Got there at 6, TS side was already overflowing into the Coeburn section. I ended up sitting among the Coeburn Crazies.

When the teams came out, they were shooting like TS was the home team and Haysi the away. Ended up switching ends after it looked like Haysi raised a stink.

As for the game, the first four minutes were wild. Shots dropping for everyone. Dockery was cold, but Kecev was hot. Haysi was hot as well. 17-15 Haysi at the end of the first.

Same story in the second quarter. Haysi hit most of their shots and TS was just a little bit cold. They stuck with the Tigers, but just couldn't get that little break they needed to take the lead. 29-26 Haysi at the half.

Same old song and dance in the third. I think Haysi jumped out by as many as 7 or 8 before TS whittled it down to 4 at the end of the period. 39-35 Haysi after three.

In the fourth the Titans finally started playing better ball. They battled back and took the lead 47-44 with 2:36 remaining. Kecev missed the front end of two straight one and one's. Haysi chipped away, but TS answered each time. 49-44 TS with 1:33 remaining. Haysi got a quick bucket, 49-46 with 0:49.

Haysi started pressing with about 1:30 left after a make. TS had a little trouble with the inbounds. Haysi sent Dockery to the line 6 times over the last few minutes and Mark drained them all.

51-48 with 9 ticks left on the clock. Haysi came down and got one halfway decent look from behind the arc. Hit the front of the rim and TS got the rebound to set the final margin.

Scoring for Haysi:

Viers 24 pt. 1 asst., 3 reb, 1 stl
Jones 9 pt, 4 asst, 4 reb
Compton 5 pt, 1 asst, 6 reb
Barton(?) #20 6 pt, 2 reb.
Anderson 2 pt, 8 reb
#52 2 pt
#32 1 reb.

Haysi was 1-3 from the line, 11 total team fouls

Scoring for TS:

Kecev 21 pt, 3 asst, 2 reb
Dockery 16 pt, 1 asst, 4 reb, 2 stl, 1 block
Warner 7 pt, 2 asst, 2 reb, 2 stl, 1 block
Jordan 5 pt, 4 reb
Estep 2 pt, 4 reb
Lawson played but did not score.

TS was 6-9 from the line, 11 total team fouls.

Re: Haysi vs TS Region D quarterfinal

I was impressed with the way Haysi played. They came out with a fire and determination I haven't seen since they lost to Twin Valley in January.

I love the Titans and the energy that the Army brings to the tournament, but I have doubts as to whether TS can get past Gate City or more importantly Twin Valley.

Actually the more important game will be against Gate City as it will be an elimination game. I see them having a good chance to win that game but little if any chance to defeat Twin Valley if the two were to meet.

TV is on a whole other level than the rest of the region. I'm curious to see how they will do at the state level.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gate City defeats Twin Springs.

TS has an enormous amount of talent on the team, but they are relying heavily on Kecev at this time who has only been playing with the team a short while.

Re: Haysi vs TS Region D quarterfinal

I think Kilgore and Parks are both out.

However, GC has some younger kids who stepped up in the LPD tournament and shocked the hell out of some people.

Both TS and GC are playing really good basketball right now, so it could go either way.

The fact that Haysi played TS within 3 pts and dominated them in the first quarter makes me think GC has a slight edge. Haysi is a really good team, but towards the end of the season they lost a helluva lot more games than they won.
